A Note on September 13

On September 13, a young person was resting on the bench in the garage of Yohaku no Ie, and the police came to check on the situation.

The experience made me think again about how to keep this place both safe and open.

Yohaku no Ie is not a place where anyone can come and go freely at any time.

But I hope it can still be a place where someone who stops by feels,

“It’s okay to be here.”

I’m sorry for the concern this caused our neighbors.

From here, I’ll keep thinking about how we can open this place safely.

And the following day, I had a chance to hear from a neighbor about what had happened.

It made me see the situation from another perspective.

From the outside, someone may look suspicious.
But we can never know exactly why a person was there, or what was truly going on inside.

I want to remember both sides:
creating boundaries for safety, while also trying not to see a person from only one perspective.

To the person who rested here that day

If you felt even a little comfortable here,
I was glad to know that.

Please stop by again when Yohaku no Ie is open.

(Next time, I’ll make sure it’s clear from the outside whether we’re open.
Otherwise, it might look like you’re trespassing. ^^)

If you ever need to rest,
I hope you can find a place where you feel safe and at ease.

And wherever you are,
remember to make space for yourself—
to pause and return to yourself.
